Summary: Bradford White Water Heater Company makes one of the best water heater on the market. All water heaters are fill and tested at their American based factory. Tanks are actually welded by the United Auto Workers Union. With virtually no call backs or recalls we find these water heater to be one of the most reliable water heater available. Bradford White also has a lot of add on features that can be added to the water heater. Some add on features allow the water heater to double it's effective hot water capacity. Other all for more efficient heating and less heating during periods when hot water is not needed.

Improved Gas Valve and Combustion Features

During normal operation, air for combustion is drawn into the water heater through the opening in the jacket. This air travels down and around the combustion chamber and enters through holes in the very bottom of the corrosion-resistant combustion chamber. The air then travels up through the oriented flame arrestor plate louvers, where the velocity of the air is increased and its direction altered. The air then mixes in a normal manner with the supplied gas and is efficiently combusted, producing very low NOx emissions. In the case where trace amounts of flammable vapors are present in the air flowing into the combustion chamber, the burner or pilot flame harmlessly ignites the vapors. If flammable vapors are in sufficient quantity to prevent normal combustion the burner and pilot flame is shut down. Should the flammable vapors continue to the burner, the flame arrestor plate prevents the flames from traveling backwards and igniting vapors outside of the combustion chamber. The calibrated, multipurpose thermal switch recognizes this and shuts down the pilot and main burner. This switch also deactivates the burner and pilot in the unlikely event of restricted airflow caused by severe lint, dust or oil accumulation on the arrestor plate.

The heart of Bradford White’s Defender Safety System® is the flame arrestor design of the patented ScreenLok® Technology. This precisely engineered and manufactured component is made 304L alloy stainless steel and contains up to eighteen thousand, geometrically oriented louvers. These micro dimensioned louvers increase the velocity of incoming air to the system. If flammable vapors enter this uniquely designed system and are ignited, a vector effect occurs inside of the combustion chamber. The combination of high velocity air entering the chamber and the vector effect caused by combustion will prevent any flames present in the chamber from traveling backwards through the flame arrestor plate and outside of the water heater.

Our Comparison Opinion:

State & AO Smith - To start off, AO Smith and State are owned by the same company. Both of these water heater have good reliability and performance. We currently carry State. We recommend staying away from AO Smith since most local supply houses stopped distribution about 3 years ago. In comparison to Bradford White we find State water heater to be maybe one step below, but still a good water heater.

Bradford White - We've had little if any issues with Bradford White water heaters. They are made in American and every tank is fill and pressure tested. Meaning we don't have lemons making it into the field. We are definite a big fan of Bradford White. You can't go wrong with these water heaters.

American - One of only a few water heater manufactures that still glass line the tanks, Bradford White is the other. These are great water heaters and we've had very few if any call backs or recalls. The only downside is availability. We try to recommend clients go with more readily available companies since repair parts are sometimes needed - no product is perfect.

Kenmore, Maytag, & GE - Though we do carry GE heat pump water heaters and have had good results. We avoid Home Center water heaters, such as GE, Kemore, and Maytag, because we find their reliability to be sub-standard. You get what you pay for with these models. We have also found most clients have a hard time actually getting warranty service when a failure occurs. Obviously we are biased when we tell clients to avoid these Home Center brands, but when I look outside at our stock of water heaters to recycle these big name brands make up over 80% of the pile.
